In Fort Myers, Naples, and across the country, breast augmentation remains popular and is showing no signs of slowing down, according to the latest statistical snapshot from the folks who track plastic surgery trends among some of the country’s most sought-after surgeons. In its report, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery found that breast augmentation increased in popularity by 6.7 percent in 2015 from the previous year and was the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure overall, with only liposuction seeing higher numbers. Meanwhile, ASAPS noted increases from 2014 for all other breast procedures for which data was available, except for breast reduction, which saw a 10 percent decrease in popularity.
The good news is, women who decide to enhance their breasts have more options than ever before. Here are some of the key shifts highlighted in the ASAPS survey:
- Fat transfer. Fat transfer, which is the process of moving fat from one area of the body to a more desirable location, has a wide appeal, but especially among women who want to enhance their breasts. Fat grafting alone can create a modest increase in breast size, or the procedure can be used in conjunction with breast implants for a natural looking and feeling result. This is the first year ASAPS has included fat transfer data in its report. Member surgeons performed 18,135 procedures for transferring fat to the breasts.
- Breast lifts. Women are also choosing to correct sagging, uneven, and drooping breasts with breast lift surgery. The past year saw a 12 percent increase in such procedures, and landed breast lift among the top 5 cosmetic surgical procedures for women for the first time ever, replacing nose jobs. While there are several techniques available for breast lift, I most often perform a vertical breast lift with a silicone gel implant for the best result.
- Breast implant revision. Breast implant revision is another area seeing heightened interest. This surgery is typically performed when a woman chooses to upgrade, downsize, or remove her implants. When you consider the increasing list of breast enhancement options available to women, from new implant options to state-of-the-art VECTRA® 3-D imaging, it’s no surprise that 38,071 people opted for a revision procedure last year!
