During your consultation, Dr. Hasen’s laser specialists will work with you to help you determine your candidacy. It’s important to understand that some people are better suited to this type of laser resurfacing than others. In particular, fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing treatments address a few common conditions very well:
- Certain types of scarring like surgery and traumatic scars
- Uneven tone or rough texture
- Lines, wrinkles, and some other signs of aging
Dr. Hasen’s practice is the first in southwest Florida to offer synergistic coagulation and ablation for advanced resurfacing, or SCAAR. This specialized scar treatment can restore a sense of normalcy to people affected by thick scars that cause limitation to motion or other functional problems.

Fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing works by removing, or ablating, damaged outer layers of skin and stimulating the generation of newer skin that lies beneath. Both our UltraPulse® and AcuPulse™ lasers from Lumenis are fitted with technology that regulates their temperature throughout the entire procedure, ensuring that it stays within a safe and effective range.
Among the Lumenis UltraPulse family of fractionated CO2 laser treatments, we use the TotalFX™ configuration for facial laser resurfacing. TotalFX is the most versatile configuration available, incorporating a range of settings. This allows us to combine the more powerful capabilities necessary for set-in wrinkles and acne scars with the milder laser settings meant to restore skin texture and smooth out pigment inconsistencies.

The Procedure
Each fractionated CO2 laser resurfacing procedure is performed right here in our office. Depending on the significance of your procedure, we may suggest a combination of topical anesthetic, local injectable anesthetic, or a sedative to keep you comfortable. Once your skin has been prepared, Dr. Hasen’s experts guide the laser handpiece over your skin, delivering short bursts of laser energy precisely where you need it.

The Recovery
You may wish to take the remainder of the day off from work and other activities in order to give yourself time to relax and stay out of the sun. In the days that follow, your skin will likely look and feel as if it’s sunburned. This is normal; it’s also usually easy to conceal with makeup. It’s very important to avoid unnecessary sun exposure, even with sunblock, because healing skin is especially sensitive to UV rays.
The Results
It takes time for your new skin to improve. However, after about a week, you should begin to notice fewer lines and a more even skin tone emerging, with your results at their best after a couple of months.
In order to enjoy your results for as long as possible, be sure to make regular sunscreen application a normal part of your daily routine.
