The Future of Fat Looks Fabulous

Every spring, the entire medical aesthetic community looks forward to the release of the previous year’s statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons®, or ASPS. 2016’s numbers are just beginning to trickle in, and so far the word we’re hearing most is “fat.” As many of my breast augmentation patients in Fort Myers can tell you, fat is having a bit of a moment.

Once nearly universally vilified, fat is finding its niche as a volume enhancer in both face and body procedures. Since the previous year, breast augmentation using fat rather than implants has jumped 72% — an incredible increase in popularity in just a single year. So, what’s behind its newfound popularity?

Early cosmetic fat grafting techniques were promising but lacked the refinement to encourage long-lasting results. It wasn’t a good match for breast augmentation because the results it created were usually rather conservative and short-lived. Over time, the body would naturally absorb the grafted fat and the results would dwindle away. But advancements in the field have contributed to its rise in popularity. Today’s surgeons use sophisticated techniques for removing the donor fat, ensuring as much fat as possible stays healthy and viable. Present-day fat grafting techniques can create more significant results that last longer, too.

Although both saline and silicone implants are FDA approved and understood to be safe, many women are drawn to the “natural” element of fat grafting for breast augmentation. The procedure uses the woman’s own fat, taken from another part of her body, so there’s no risk of rejection. Contact us today to learn more.
