You may not realize it, but where you recover after surgery plays a big part in your healing journey. Factors such as climate, access to post-surgical care, and even the pace of life all warrant some consideration when planning your procedure. If you’re spending your tummy tuck recovery in Fort Myers or Naples, Florida, this guide—featuring real patient insights—will ensure you are ready for the transformative journey ahead of you.
The Tummy Tuck Recovery Process
Aesthetic surgery is still surgery, so be prepared for swelling, bruising, and the restrictions that come with downtime. I will send you home with detailed discharge instructions and advise when you can safely resume certain activities, such as sleeping on your stomach, showering, or engaging in vigorous exercise.
Your recovery timeline will vary based on your individual healing rate, general health, and lifestyle before your procedure and the post-op care you provide yourself. You will need plenty of rest during the early days and 2 to 4 weeks off work, depending on the physicality of your job. Complete recovery may take months as your body heals and the final results of your surgery emerge.
How the Fort Myers Lifestyle Can Affect Your Recovery
Living in Fort Myers can enhance your recovery experience but also presents unique challenges. Here are some key factors to consider:
- Heat and Humidity: High temperatures can exacerbate swelling. Ensure you stay cool, hydrated, and out of the sun, especially during the hottest parts of the day. Protecting your incision sites from direct sunlight can help avoid discoloration.
- Beach Access: While you may be tempted to enjoy the beach, you’ll need to keep your incisions clean and dry. Avoid swimming or soaking in water until your doctor clears you to do so.
- Active Lifestyle: Many Fort Myers residents enjoy active lifestyles. Gradually reintroducing activities is important; listen to your body and consult your surgeon before resuming strenuous exercises.
Essential Recovery Tips for Fort Myers Patients
Our RealSelf reviews contain detailed insights and information about our patients’ surgical experiences. Below, you will find several tips from some of our former tummy tuck patients.
#1. Start Early
Recovery from surgery often begins well before your operation. RealSelf user josettestuff shares that her tummy tuck journey started a year in advance with copious research and adhering to a healthy lifestyle, including a low-carb, high-protein diet and walking and Pilates each day. Her regimen paid off, with josettestuff noting, “I found I have had none of the back aches most people complain about and was standing upright within three days.”
#2. Optimize Your Wellness Routine
Similarly, PejR states that “clean eating and resuming exercise have helped immensely” in managing postoperative discomfort and swelling. Fellow patient Sunnynaples stresses the importance of walking for 10 minutes every hour, and RealSelf user fliff concurs. “Actually walking and moving around helps a great deal with the stiffness,” she writes.
Nutrition is another major factor in tummy tuck recovery. Josettestuff started vitamin C supplements 2 weeks before surgery and arnica and bromelain tablets a week prior to her procedure. (Arnica and bromelain are 2 supplements that help with swelling and bruising.) Sunnynaples, meanwhile, incorporated power shakes and fresh fruit into her post-surgical diet to support her recovery.
#3. Prioritize Rest
Walking and light stretches are important, but listening to your body and taking things at your own pace are also vital. Sunnynaples and fliff each slept in a recliner throughout their recovery—something josettestuff wishes she had done. In her words, “The only real pain I experienced was getting in and out of bed.”
We recommend our patients use a recliner, as it can make the transition to sleeping on your back easier. When paired with extra pillows, it provides support, elevates the body to help with swelling, and makes it more comfortable to transition from reclining to standing (and vice versa).
#4. Have the Right Garments
During your recovery, you’ll need to consider not only the binders and compression garments you wear but also the type of clothes you wear over them. Once more, our patients have plenty of advice and recommendations.
Sunnynaples chose to wear thin tank tops under her binder garment to avoid rubbing and irritating the incision site. Josettestuff, meanwhile, suggests that patients, “Get a couple of loose dresses, more comfortable than sweats, especially here where it is hot.”
She also mentions that the type of bra you wear can affect your comfort in a compression garment. Her faja offered her more compression but less comfort than a Spanx-type garment, as the added bulk and pressure on her shoulders was almost too much with the straps of her regular bra. However, switching to a strapless bra with the faja or wearing the one-piece Spanx garment led to a much more comfortable experience.
#5. Stay on Top of Your Medication
You may have several medications and supplements to take during your recovery. Some patients find having a chart helpful, while others may prefer to use a pillbox to stay on schedule and keep track of the many pills. For josettestuff, her husband came up with his own approach to help! As she writes:
“My husband devised a system that worked really good. He bought dixie cups and labeled them for the various times of the day. Then each morning he filled them. This is a big help! Especially since some meds were one day, some three, some a week, etc.”

#6. Practice Proper Wound and Scar Care
Drains are commonly used after tummy tuck surgery to prevent fluid from accumulating and causing seromas. Josettestuff felt empowered to handle her drain care by watching videos. Fliff found that applying Aquafor helped manage discomfort, and Sunnynaples used antibiotic ointment and arnica cream.
RealSelf user NicoleJamesL used Embrace scar pads as part of her scar management protocol. Josettestuff explains, “these are strips that look like clear tape that go over the scars. You can leave them on until they fall off naturally, about 7-10 days.” NicoleJamesL found these were so successful in minimizing her scar’s appearance that she writes, “I forget I have an incision sometimes!”
Patient Testimonials and Recovery Stories
A common theme in our patients’ reviews is appreciation for our team’s level of postoperative care. RealSelf user lalv76 explains, “The office has an onsite surgical suite with overnight recovery, which is state of the art and beautifully decorated.”
Josettestuff is one such patient who took advantage of this option. As she writes, “[I] stayed overnight which I would highly recommend if your dr offers it and you can afford it . Takes the worry off your loved ones and you don’t have to get in a car and return to Dr the next morning. I also arranged for a nurse to come to the house for the first five days when I was home.”
Although she needed additional follow-up appointments due to drain-related issues, she says she has “no regrets” about the procedure. “I am in 100% and already thrilled with what I see.”
Fliff similarly benefited from additional care following her tummy tuck. She says, “I had decided to stay overnight at the clinic and hire a private nurse. This was the best decision I made. Neither my husband nor I would have been able to handle the situation. My husband recommends that people spend two days and nights with a nurse. I guess I was a handful!”
She goes on to say:
“Note: with a tummy tuck, the danger of a blood clot increases, so you have to have a coumadin shot daily for 10 days. Neither my husband nor I could face doing this. I was able to go to the clinic during the week and get the shot. On the weekend, Marie Jackson the patient coordinator came all the way to our house to give me the shot. This was above and beyond and so appreciated by both of us. […] I’m so glad I had the support of Marie during that first week especially, she was a life saver, she is so sweet and kind.”
