What Is a Mini Facelift?

A mini facelift is performed to improve signs of aging on the lower third of the face—in other words, the chin, jawline, and neck. Because a mini facelift is limited to that region, it’s less invasive with smaller incisions, and many patients experience a reasonably short recovery time, returning to work 10 – 14 days. In some cases, “mini” also means more limited results. In comparison, my SMAS facelift is performed with minimal scarring and provides significant and lasting results. Keep reading to learn more.

What’s the difference between a mini facelift and a full facelift?

Whereas a mini facelift targets the lower third of the face, a full facelift extends to the cheeks and midface. It’s often paired with eyelid surgery and other procedures when a patient is interested in total facial rejuvenation. Of course, a mini facelift can be combined with other procedures, too, such as a brow lift to restore a youthful look to the upper face or fat transfer to bring lost volume back to desired areas.

A full facelift achieves more dramatic results than a mini facelift, so it’s often the better choice for patients who want to see a bigger change in their appearance. Accordingly, a full facelift has a longer total recovery time, with most patients returning to work within 14 days, and most activities within 3 to 4 weeks.

One more important consideration: a full facelift has a higher overall price range than a mini facelift. The cost for your specific procedure, whichever you choose, will always depend on a variety of factors.

Mini Facelift vs. My SMAS Facelift

The extended deep plane facelift lift the SMAS layer.  SMAS stands for “superficial musculoaponeurotic system,” and this technique provides more comprehensive, lasting results than a mini facelift. During a deep plane facelift, I manipulate the deep layers of tissues, manually restoring them to more youthful positions and adding support. This creates significant improvements that look much more natural and  last longer than a traditional facelift.

For those seeking a shorter incision option, my extended deep plane facelift minimizes scarring compared to traditional facelift incisions. My technique uses a thin incision just inside the hairline, above the ear, then around the earlobe, and back into the hairline. This incision doesn’t require shaving the hair, and the resulting scars are well-hidden and very discreet.
