Study Finds That Men Need More Botox® Than Women

At the 61st Annual American Academy of Dermatology meeting in San Francisco, scientists presented a study showing that men need twice the amount of Botox® than women to achieve similar results. The reason why men need more Botox® is due the greater muscle tone and thickness of male skin.

Currently, men make up only 15% of Botox® users in the U.S., however, that number is rapidly growing.

Dr. Alastair Carruthers, the Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of British Columbia, studied the safety and efficacy of dour dose ranges of Botox® Cosmetic when used on the male frown lines. Carruthers found that men treated with 40-80 units of Botox® has the most satisfactory treatment results. In women, only 20-40 units of Botox® are needed to achieve optimum results. The findings are useful in establishing the proper dose for optimal results on men.

During the study, eighty males were injected with 20, 40, 60 or 80 units of Botox® Cosmetics. At the end of 52 weeks, results show a lack of improvement in the frown lines in men who only received 20 units. All of the treatment levels were tolerated and no adverse events were reported, even in the patients with 80 units.

There has been a rapid incline in the amount of non-surgical cosmetic procedures among men, especially in baby boomers (+30%). Male cosmetic surgery has become more commonplace in the media and no longer is associated with a certain stigma. Furthermore, growing competition in the workplace has resulted in men taking extra measures to ensure job security. The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery found that men are more than twice as likely to state work-related reasons for their decision to undergo a cosmetic treatment.

Botox® Cosmetic can be administered to men in Naples by a board-certified plastic surgeon. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Naples, we are experienced in treating wrinkles in both men and women using Botox® Cosmetic as well as dermal fillers.
