Thermage® Skin Tightening
Thermage with Comfort Pulse Technology™ (CPT) is an innovative procedure that tightens, contours and lifts skin on the face and body without surgery. Thermage CPT, available at our Naples med spa, reduces signs of aging skin, giving you a more youthful appearance. This non-ablative radiofrequency device is FDA-cleared for tissue tightening. It can tighten and lift skin on the face, jowls, forehead and neck with no incisions and no recovery time. It has also been cleared by the FDA to tighten skin on other parts of the body, including arms, thighs, legs, buttocks, abdomen and hands.
With additional specialty tips, Dr. Hasen and his physician assistant, Brandie, offer advanced procedures with the Thermage CPT machine, including Eyes by Thermage™, a procedure popular with many of their patients that smooths and tightens upper eyelids and the skin around the eye, making eyes appear more rested without surgery or injections. In addition, they now offer Body by Thermage™ and Hands by Thermage™, two other FDA-cleared procedures for his Naples, Florida, patients.

Much like the original Thermage, Thermage CPT works by delivering pulses of radiofrequency (RF) energy deep into the skin to create a uniform and volumetric heating effect in the middle and deep layers of the skin. However, the new Comfort Pulse Technology™ improves patient comfort in two ways: first, by breaking up the pulses of radiofrequency energy into smaller micro-pulses interwoven with cooling bursts; and second, by delivering the energy pulses through a new vibrating handpiece. By improving comfort during the procedure, the tissues can be treated more aggressively for better results.
A reverse thermal gradient is created in the skin with the Thermage CPT procedure. An internal contact coolant within the treatment tip is used to cool and protect the top layer of skin while simultaneously heating the middle and deep layers of the skin. Thermage CPT treatment provides more even heating of the tissues than previous versions. Heating the deeper layers of the skin is designed to cause immediate contraction of collagen fibers, gradual collagen tightening and production of new collagen over time. During treatment, you may experience a sensation of deep heat.
Thermage Procedure FAQ (Face by Thermage and Body by Thermage) With Comfort Pulse Technology
What is the Face by Thermage procedure?
Thermage is a name for the skin tightening procedure that is performed by Dr. Hasen and Brandie using the Comfort Pulse Technology radiofrequency system. This procedure allows them to treat aging and sun-damaged skin by delivering deep, intense heat without harming the top layer of the skin, the epidermis.
How does Thermage work?
Where on the face is Face by Thermage performed?
Even a small amount of skin tightening in certain key areas can be advantageous for significant cosmetic improvement. For example treating the skin of the forehead can lift the eyebrows and enhance the appearance of the eyes, making the eyes appear more open, alert and less tired. Previously, this result could only be obtained with major surgery. In June of 2004, the FDA approved the use of Thermage for tightening the skin of the face, jowls and neck.
Why should I see Dr. Kent V. Hasen if I am interested in a non-surgical facelift?
Kent V. Hasen, M.D., is a fellowship-trained cosmetic plastic surgeon with impeccable credentials and extensive training in cosmetic surgery. He was the first doctor in Southwest Florida to begin performing the Thermage procedure. He obtained the ThermaCool TC® device soon after its FDA approval in the United States. Dr. Hasen has always stayed on the cutting edge of plastic surgery by employing the latest technology in his practice. He has selected his physician assistant, Brandie, to also perform Thermage CPT. He trusts Brandie’s experience and credentials, and her patients love their results.
Dr. Hasen recently upgraded his Thermage to the latest version called Thermage CPT which stands for Comfort Pulse Technology. This newest version is more effective and much more effective than previous versions of Thermage. As Thermage CPT is a non-surgical procedure to help tighten and lift the skin of the forehead, face and neck, a qualified and trusted cosmetic plastic surgeon is best suited to direct and plan your treatment. Dr. Hasen’s Thermage Certified assistant performs each procedure under Dr. Hasen’s guidance and planning. Dr. Hasen is a plastic surgeon who has the ability to offer you both surgical and non-surgical options for facial rejuvenation. He can decide if the Thermage CPT procedure will provide the results you desire or if another option such as the minimally invasive FaceTite procedure or a facial plastic surgery procedure such as a brow lift, eyelid lift, face lift or neck lift is better suited to your needs.
What is the Body by Thermage procedure?
Thermage is a skin tightening procedure that is performed by Dr. Hasen and Brandie using the Comfort Pulse Technology radiofrequency system. This procedure allows him to treat aging and sun-damaged skin of the body including the abdomen, arms, hands, thighs, legs and buttocks, by delivering deep, intense heat without harming the top layer of the skin, the epidermis. Additionally, a new “Deep Contouring” tip has been developed to enhance contouring during the procedure.
Is Thermage painful?
Each time the vibrating handpiece pulses, there is a brief sensation of intense heat in the skin. The ThermaCool TC device monitors the surface temperature of the skin and applies a cooling cryogen spray, which is delivered before, during and after the application of heat. Additionally, Dr. Hasen prescribes a pain pill and/or a relaxing pill to take before the Thermage CPT procedure.
Is the Thermage procedure using Comfort Pulse Technology safe?
Yes, the ThermaCool TC device that is used in the Thermage CPT procedure has been FDA approved for the reduction of wrinkles on the face, neck and brow, as well as all over the rest of the body. Complications are extremely rare. Some tingling may occur along the jaw line for a few days. There may be some minor swelling for the first two to three days. You can usually return to your daily activity the next day.
How does my skin change?
On the surface, the texture and tone of your skin will appear more youthful. By four months after the Thermage CPT treatment, there is new collagen being produced in the deep layer of your skin called the dermis. This new collagen layer has been shown in studies to be thicker than the original collagen in test patients.
How long does the Thermage CPT procedure take?
Usually, treatments take between one to two hours, depending upon the size of the treatment area.
Is there any special preparation or follow-up regime?
No. Unlike major invasive surgery, there is no need to interrupt any medications you take or to do any fasting the day before the Thermage CPT treatment. You can return to normal activities almost immediately. Post-treatment sunscreen protection is necessary for at least two weeks.
Can Thermage be performed on tanned skin?
Yes. Unlike light sources such as IPL and certain lasers, Thermage CPT can be done on tanned and dark skin. The radio-frequency waves do not target the melanin-containing pigment cells of the skin.
When will treatment results be noticed?
You may see some immediate change from the Thermage CPT procedure as a result of initial collagen contraction. Long-term improvement generally occurs within 3 to 6 months. In clinical studies, over 80% of the patients demonstrated significant improvement in wrinkles and tightening of the skin up to 6 months after a single treatment.1 In certain cases, a second treatment 3 to 6 months after the first one may be warranted to achieve additional lifting and tightening in certain areas.
