Non-Invasive Procedures Rocket in 2009

According to Plastic Surgery Practice, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery recently released its statistics on surgical and non-invasive procedures for 2009.  The survey, which was administered to its member surgeons, shows that the economy has been playing a major role in the growing popularity of non-invasive cosmetic treatments.

According to the survey, 80% of doctors claimed that patients are choosing non-invasive treatments as a method to gain an edge in the workforce. As opposed to invasive surgery, non-invasive procedures offer instant results at a much lower cost. There was a 45% boost in Botox sales for 2009, while hyaluronic acid treatments were up 48%, chemical peels were up 52% and poly-l-lactic acid-based fillers were up an substantial 71%.

The survey also showed that 77% of surgeons noticed that patients were more informed on their options for elective aesthetic treatments.  Physicians noted that patients are more actively researching different procedures and doctors to suit their aesthetic goals.  According to the survey, the availability of information on the overall surgery process plays a major role in decision-making for patients.

Plastic Surgery Practice reports the invasive surgeries with the most significant increases for 2009 were as follows:

  • Ablative skin resurfacing (up 57%)
  • Revision surgery (up 18%)
  • Facelifts (up 14%)

The procedures with the largest decreases are as follows:

With the increasing amount of injectable and non-invasive cosmetic technologies entering the market, said treatments may become the norm in the plastic surgery industry.

Hello, I was wondering if Dr. Hasen uses the blunt tip cannula for fillers such as Restylane in the tear trough area? Thank you. Ro Norcia
